1
וסליק דוד מתמן ויתב במצדתא עין גדי:
gdy eyn bmtsdtha wythb mthmn dwd wslyq
When Saul had returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi.”

והוה כד תב שאול מבתר פלשתאי וחויאו ליה למימר הא דוד במדברא דעין גדי:
gdy deyn bmdbra dwd ha lmymr lyh wkhwyaw plshthay mbthr shawl thb kd whwh
Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the rocks of the wild goats.

ודבר שאול תלתא אלפין גבר עולים מכל ישראל ואזל למבעי ית דוד וגברוהי על אפי שקיפי כיפיא:
kypya shqypy apy el wgbrwhy dwd yth lmbey wazl yshral mkl ewlym gbr alpyn thltha shawl wdbr
He came to the sheep pens by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were staying in the innermost parts of the cave.

ואתא לחטרי עאנא דעל אורחא ותמן מערתא ועל שאול למעבד צורכיה ודוד וגברוהי בסיפי מערתא יתבין:
ythbyn mertha bsypy wgbrwhy wdwd tswrkyh lmebd shawl wel mertha wthmn awrkha del eana lkhTry watha
David’s men said to him, “Behold, the day of which Yahweh said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly.

ואמרו גברי דוד ליה הא יומא דאמר יי לך הא אנא מסר ית בעיל דבבך בידך ותעביד ליה כמא דתקן בעינך וקם דוד ופסק ית כנף מעילא דלשאול ברז:
brz dlshawl meyla knp yth wpsq dwd wqm beynk dthqn kma lyh wthebyd bydk dbbk beyl yth msr ana ha lk yy damr ywma ha lyh dwd gbry wamrw
Afterward, David’s heart struck him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

והוה בתר כן וחש דוד בלביה על די פסק ית כנפא דלשאול:
dlshawl knpa yth psq dy el blbyh dwd wkhsh kn bthr whwh
He said to his men, “Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is Yahweh’s anointed.”

ואמר לגברוהי חס לי מן קדם יי אם אעביד ית פתגמא הדין לרבוני למשיחא דיי לאושטא ידי ביה ארי משיחא דיי הוא:
hwa dyy mshykha ary byh ydy lawshTa dyy lmshykha lrbwny hdyn pthgma yth aebyd am yy qdm mn ly khs lgbrwhy wamr
So David checked his men with these words, and didn’t allow them to rise against Saul. Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

ופיס דוד ית גברוהי בפתגמיא ולא שבקינון למיקם על שאול ושאול קם ממערתא ואזל באורחא:
bawrkha wazl mmertha qm wshawl shawl el lmyqm shbqynwn wla bpthgmya gbrwhy yth dwd wpys
David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave and cried after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and showed respect.

וקם דוד בתר כן ונפק מן מערתא וקרא בתר שאול למימר רבוני מלכא ואסתכי שאול לאחורוהי וכרע דוד על אפוהי על ארעא וסגיד:
wsgyd area el apwhy el dwd wkre lakhwrwhy shawl wasthky mlka rbwny lmymr shawl bthr wqra mertha mn wnpq kn bthr dwd wqm
David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to men’s words, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks to harm you’?

ואמר דוד לשאול למא את שמע ית פתגמי בני אנשא דאמרין הא דוד כמין בישתך:
byshthk kmyn dwd ha damryn ansha bny pthgmy yth shme ath lma lshawl dwd wamr
Behold, today your eyes have seen how Yahweh had delivered you today into my hand in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you. I said, ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is Yahweh’s anointed.’

הא יומא דין חזאה עינך ית דמסרך יי יומא דין בידי במערתא ואמרו אוחרנין למקטלך וחסית עלך ואמרית לא אושיט ידי ברבוני ארי משיחא דיי הוא:
hwa dyy mshykha ary brbwny ydy awshyT la wamryth elk wkhsyth lmqTlk awkhrnyn wamrw bmertha bydy dyn ywma yy dmsrk yth eynk khzah dyn ywma ha
Moreover, my father, behold, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe and didn’t kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it.

ורבוני אסתכל אף חזי ית כנף מעילך בידי ארי במפסקי ית כנף מעילך ולא קטלתיך דע וחזו ארי לית בידי חוב וסורחן ולא חטית לך ואת כמין על נפשי למקטלה:
lmqTlh npshy el kmyn wath lk khTyth wla wswrkhn khwb bydy lyth ary wkhzw de qTlthyk wla meylk knp yth bmpsqy ary bydy meylk knp yth khzy ap asthkl wrbwny
May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand will not be on you.

ידין יי בינא ובינך ויתפרע לי יי מנך וידי לא תהי בך:
bk thhy la wydy mnk yy ly wythpre wbynk byna yy ydyn
As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness;’ but my hand will not be on you.
14
כמא דאמרין מתלא דמלקדמין מרשיעין תפוק חובתהון וידי לא תהי בך:
bk thhy la wydy khwbthhwn thpwq mrshyeyn dmlqdmyn mthla damryn kma
Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? A dead dog? A flea?

בתר מן נפק מלכא דישראל בתר מן את רדיף בתר חלש חד בתר הדיוט חד:
khd hdywT bthr khd khlsh bthr rdyp ath mn bthr dyshral mlka npq mn bthr
May Yahweh therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.”

ויהי יי לדיין ויעבד דין בינא ובינך וגלי קדמוהי וידון דיני ויתפרע עולבני ממך:
mmk ewlbny wythpre dyny wydwn qdmwhy wgly wbynk byna dyn wyebd ldyyn yy wyhy
It came to pass, when David had finished speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, “Is that your voice, my son David?” Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

והוה כד שיצי דוד למללא ית פתגמיא האלין עם שאול ואמר שאול הקלך דין ברי דוד וארים שאול קליה ובכא:
wbka qlyh shawl warym dwd bry dyn hqlk shawl wamr shawl em halyn pthgmya yth lmlla dwd shytsy kd whwh
He said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for you have done good to me, whereas I have done evil to you.

ואמר לדוד זכאי את מני ארי את גמלתני טבתא ואנא גמלתך בישתא:
byshtha gmlthk wana Tbtha gmlthny ath ary mny ath zkay ldwd wamr
You have declared today how you have dealt well with me, because when Yahweh had delivered me up into your hand, you didn’t kill me.

ואת חויתא יומא דין ית דעבדת עמי טיבו וית דמסרני יי בידך ולא קטלתני:
qTlthny wla bydk yy dmsrny wyth Tybw emy debdth yth dyn ywma khwytha wath
For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may Yahweh reward you good for that which you have done to me today.
20
וארי ישכח גבר ית בעיל דבביה וישלחניה באורח תקנא ויי ישלמנך טבתא חלף יומא דין דעבדתא לי:
ly debdtha dyn ywma khlp Tbtha yshlmnk wyy thqna bawrkh wyshlkhnyh dbbyh beyl yth gbr yshkkh wary
Now, behold, I know that you will surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.
21
וכען הא ידענא ארי ממלך תמלך ותתקיים בידך מלכותא דישראל:
dyshral mlkwtha bydk wththqyym thmlk mmlk ary ydena ha wken
Swear now therefore to me by Yahweh that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.”

וכען קיים לי במימרא דיי דלא תשיצי ית בני בתרי ולא תפסוק ית שמי מבית אבא:
aba mbyth shmy yth thpswq wla bthry bny yth thshytsy dla dyy bmymra ly qyym wken
David swore to Saul. Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
